Palmate and pinnate types of palm trees

There are about 3000 species of palm trees in the world. They can be either palmate-leaved (fan shaped) palm species or pinnate-leaved (feather shaped) palm species.

The well-known feather shaped species are:Arenga engleri, Butia capitata, Chamaedorea elegans, Chamaedorea microspadix, Dypsis baronii, Howea forsteriana, Phoenix canariensis, Phoenix dactylifera, Phoenix reclinata, Phoenix roebelenii, Syagrus romanzoffiana.

The common fan shaped species are Acoelorrhaphe wrightii, Chamaerops humilis, Corypha umbraculifera, Latania lontaroides, Livistona chinensis, Livistona decipiens, Nannorrhops ritchiana, Rhapidophyllum hystrix, Rhapis excelsa, Sabal causiarum, Sabal etonia, Sabal minor, Sabal palmetto, Serenoa repens, Trachycarpus fortunei, Washingtonia filifera, Washingtonia robusta.
